Overview:
Set in 1852 in Swedens far north, To Cook a Bear follows revivalist pastor and self-taught naturalist Lars Levi Laestadius and his young Sami apprentice Jussi as a series of disappearances and brutal deaths unsettle their remote community. While the villagers blame a marauding bear and demand retribution, Laestadius suspects a human predator and applies careful observation, herbal knowledge, and early forensic thinking to the case. As the investigation widens, the pair collide with corrupt officials, exploitation of the indigenous Sami, and the tensions between faith, science, and superstition. Harsh landscapes, hunger, and bitter winter darkness raise the stakes, turning the hunt into a struggle for survival.
